TA101 – Introduction to Transactional Analysis (for Counselling Students)

A foundation that helps your training make sense

At Northside Training we aim to offer training that is practical, reflective, and grounded in real clinical work. Many counselling students tell us that taking an introduction to Transactional Analysis — TA101 — has helped them integrate their learning more confidently and clearly.

Rather than being “another theory to memorise,” TA101 offers a coherent framework that many students find useful for understanding clients, themselves, and what happens in the counselling room.

What you will gain from this course

TA101 supports you to:

  • Understand what is happening between you and your client in the counselling room

  • Make sense of relational patterns without pathologising

  • Connect theory with what you notice in placement and skills practice

  • Develop clearer clinical language for assignments and supervision

  • Enhance your confidence as you learn and grow as a counsellor

This course invites you to slow down, think critically, and reflect — not just learn concepts, but apply them meaningfully to your emerging practice.

What TA101 covers

Across the course you will be introduced to core Transactional Analysis concepts in an accessible, engaging way, including:

  • Ego States – how different parts of self show up in you and your clients

  • Transactions – patterns of communication

  • Life Positions – underlying beliefs about self and others

  • Games – familiar, repetitive interactions

  • Scripts – how early experience shapes ongoing patterns

These ideas are explored not as abstract theory but as tools to support thinking and relational understanding in practice.

Is this course right for you now?

Many students wonder whether they should wait until after qualification to explore TA. In our experience, TA101 can be especially useful during training. It supports you to navigate your own process, make clearer sense of client work on placement, and feel more confident in supervision and clinical discussions.

You don’t need prior knowledge of Transactional Analysis — what matters most is curiosity and a willingness to think deeply about practice.

Our approach to learning

We aim to create a training environment that is:

  • Thoughtful and reflective

  • Collaborative rather than competitive

  • Grounded in clinical examples

  • Supportive of your learning process

This course is interactive, discussion-friendly, and designed to help you integrate learning at your own pace — aligning with the ethos you’ll find across our CPD and short courses.
